One Connecticut-based elementary school had this aspect reiterated after it was forced to evacuate students and staff earlier this week. The problem arose when parents were allegedly left in the dark that this safety measure was being taken.
According to the Hartford Courant, the Maria C. Colón Sanchez Elementary School was briefly evacuated on Tuesday morning. A janitor and a security guard went into a bathroom to investigate a mysterious odor and subsequently became ill. They were sent to a hospital as a precaution and students and faculty were promptly ushered from the building.
Parents were upset that children were evacuated and then brought back into the school after just one hour. Some still decided to take their kids home.
"It was a very scary experience," Jennifer Remigio, a parent, told WTNH News. "They didn't call the parents or anything. I found out from a friend calling me at work, so it was a very scary experience."
School district spokesman David Medina told the Courant that the odor was caused by a malfunctioning exhaust fan and is being repaired.
