It is fitting that the first post on our blog page is in recognition of our 59th year anniversary. 59 years of continuous operation, 24/7/365. Being very rich in history and having an innovative mindset has kept us strong for nearly six decades!
With that being said, we cannot help but look back on the who, what, when, where, why and how it all got started:
Betty Ruth Edwards established our company, Edwards Answering Service Enterprises, Inc. (EASE), on April 1, 1954, serving the town of Manchester, Connecticut. She started with nine black telephones on her dining room table, one for each client. Mrs. Edwards made an adjustment to each bell to change the tone slightly, allowing her to identify which phone was ringing!
For the first three years she and her husband Fred Edwards operated our service 24 hours seven days a week without any outside assistance. In 1957, Mrs. Edwards hired her first employee on a part time basis; this gave Betty and Fred a much needed break two afternoons a week.
By 1958, we had grown to hundreds of clients and the telephone company installed state-of-the-art switchboards. This innovation in technology allowed us to expand outside of Manchester, into Rockville.
In 1963, Mrs. Edwards moved us from her dining room to our current location at 230 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, CT. In the new location, Mrs. Edwards aggressively marketed and sold our service to new clients, and we prospered and grew.
In 1980, Mrs. Edwards’ son and current company president, Gary Edwards, joined our company. During the 1980s Betty and Gary teamed up to acquire other answering services in Manchester, East Hartford, Enfield, Bridgeport, Milford, Guilford, and Madison. Rapid growth in our business demanded faster more efficient equipment, prompting us to utilize electronic computer equipment – the first company in the local area to do so. Since that time we have been a nationwide leader in the use of computer technology in the telephone answering service industry.
In 1994 we initiated an 800 service to process merchandise orders for clients advertising products on television, newspapers, or mail order. Although the 800 order processing service required a completely different computer system and software, we were again able to totally integrate the new service into a single computer work station!
Today we utilize the latest Telescan server driven telecommunication systems. With our current setup, we have the ability to backup crucial client data in real-time, ensuring nothing is lost! Backed by UPS battery backup and a large capacity generator, we are 100% power independent during the worst weather and disaster related circumstances!
Celebrating our 59th year of service, we continue to remain a front-runner in the telecommunication industry, welcoming the challenges the future has in store!
Our company’s story is a great way to kick off our blog page! We’ll be putting out content frequently that will address everything from what we can offer our customers to things that we do here on a daily basis. Enjoy!
